Polemic and Controversy in the Corpus Oribasianum

Serena Buzzi

In late antiquity, medicine acknowledges Galen as the greatest auctoritas and no longer recognizes rivalries between medical schools. However, we can still track different levels and forms of medical controversy in the Corpus Oribasianum . In particular, the textual analysis has led us to identify some cases with polemic content; in several of them, the author follows more closely his sources (Galen and some minor physicians), while in others he intervenes personally to emphasize the Galenic source quoted, and in one case even to refute it, suggesting a different prescription according to his own experience.
